Duties
of AZYLC Counselors:
The
role of counselor is vital to mission of the AZYLC. Counselors
are a key part of the team effort of educating, guiding, and
helping
students realize a very positive and memorable experience while
attending the Arizona Youth Leadership Conference.
Counselors have historically had a close identification and rapport
with AZYLC students. It is imperative during the conference
that the young leaders serving as counselors set the example for
our young high school students to follow.
Counselors have a great deal of responsibility during the conference,
and being a counselor is not an easy job. However, the rewards
of being a counselor are many. For example, when students
say "thanks ... I want to come back next year as a counselor just
like you".
YOUR DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
1.
Wakeup students.
2. Get students to where they should be on time.
3. Conduct bed checks.
4. Act as social directors at mixers etc.
5. Participate in athletic and social events with students.
6. Facilitate group activities.
7. Advise and counsel students.
8. Maintain order and report discipline problems to the director.
9. You are the one responsible for your group
Another
expectation of counselors is to guide but do not lead -
If a group is slow to get started in a workshop activity, counselors
are expected to do what they can to get them started, without actually
leading them. If the counselor leads, there is not a chance
for a student to come to the fore as a leader, which is the goal
of the AZYLC. Answer questions, when asked, but volunteer
as little information as possible toward a solution.
Counselors always maintain close contact and communication with
the director(s). Any problems that counselors have are to be reported
immediately to the director(s).
